Week 10

Another full week with some shifting weather!  I'll be encouraging the kids to come prepared with layers, since it seems we'll have a different type of weather every day!

Harvest Party:
We'll have our harvest party on Tuesday, October 31 from 1:45-2:45 PM.  The kids will do a craft, have a snack, play a game, and listen to some fall/harvest type books.  Look for pictures on Seesaw!

Math:
This week in math we'll be finishing up our module on hundreds, tens, and ones.  We'll be using place value to 1,000, then we'll do a practice test, and take the test on place value.  We'll do our intro into the next module, and we'll end the week with some more practice on using expanded form.

Language Arts:
This week we'll be learning about a different diphthong: ou and ow.  We'll practice saying the sound and listening to how the different sounds blend together.  We'll discuss the rules for using the spelling (ou at the beginning and middle of words and syllables, ow at the end of words and syllables and when followed by an "l" or "n").  We'll also work on spelling words with ou and ow, both in isolation and in sentences.

In reading we'll discuss pictures and captions and how they can add information to the text.  We'll also identify and define key words in a text.

Christian Studies:
This week we'll continue learning about Moses and the Israelites, and we'll meet Joshua.  We'll talk about God providing water for the Israelites through Moses striking a rock, and we'll talk about the fall of Jericho.

Social Studies:
We'll continue practicing using a map, and we'll talk about location in various ways.

Week 9

We're back for a regular week of school, and it looks like the weather is finally changing!  A few things to think about with colder weather:

  • We will still go outside for recess, so please have your child come prepared for cold weather.
  • Scarves, gloves, and hats are all great ideas (it's a good idea to label them with your last name on the tags)
  • Snow suits and snow pants are not needed.
  • Snow boots can be brought to school and students can change into them before recess (once it snows, of course)
Christian Studies:
This week in Christian Studies we'll be learning about the Israelites' disobedience, even just a month after seeing God's power on Mount Sinai!  We'll learn about them making and worshipping a golden calf.  We'll also learn about God's instructions for building the tabernacle, which would be the tent-like worship place.

Math:
In math this week we'll start a new module, focusing on place value and different ways to write numbers.  This week we'll group tens as hundreds, we'll understand three-digit numbers, we'll represent three-digit-numbers, and we'll use hundreds, tens, and ones to represent numbers.

Language Arts:
We'll learn about new vowel teams this week that are called diphthongs.  This is when two vowels (or consonants that sometimes act like vowels like "y") team up to make a new sound.  This week we'll focus on oi and oy.
Our reading will focus on the main topic of a part of a text.  We'll also discuss some vocabulary, and we'll talk about supporting details that give information for the main topic.

Social Studies:
This week we'll start our new Social Studies unit on location.  We'll talk about grid maps and finding places on a grid map.  We'll also compare and contrast photos and maps.  Then we'll talk about absolute and relative location.

Week 7

This is the last week for Fall Fest fundraising!  Please remember to return your child's packet by Friday, October 13!  Fall Fest festivities begin at 10:00 AM at Howard Amon Park.  The 1 mile race starts at 11:00 AM!  Have you registered your child for the race?  If your child has raised $50 or more, you should have received an email with information regarding how to register them for the race for free!

Christian Studies:
We're moving along in the Old Testament and will be learning about the 10 plagues and the Israelites being delivered out of Egypt.  We'll also learn about the song of praise Miriam and Moses lifted up to God after they crossed the Red Sea.

Math:
This week we'll begin collecting and recording data using tally marks.  We'll also interpret and draw picture graphs and bar graphs.  We'll be answering questions about tally charts, bar graphs, and picture graphs.

Language Arts:
This week we'll continue discussing Bossy R words, this time with the /er/ sound being spelled "ur."  This is the third, least-common spelling of the /er/ sound.

We'll also be finishing up our story about Snowshoe Hare and finding out what he does for winter.  We'll be reading a poem about animals in winter and we'll be talking about the structure of the poem.

Science:
In science this week we'll be examining some maps from around the world and throughout different historical times.  We'll look at their legends and identify some of the symbols they used to identify land and water patterns.  Then the students will create their own legend with symbols they'll be using when they make a map of their models.
