This was one of the incentives that the school earned through their Fall Fest fundraising. On this day, there will be no homework and no school work. The students will spend all day rotating through fun activities, including card-writing for missionaries, BINGO, an extra fun P.E. activity, a movie, and ending the day with the Zaniac at 1:45! Lunch will also be provided that day. Each student will get one hot dog, a bag of chips, and a Capri Sun. If your student would like to bring more food to supplement this lunch, they're welcome to! They can also bring a snack for morning recess, as usual. This will also be an extra spirit wear day!

Christian Studies:
This week in Christian Studies we'll be learning about the Transfiguration of Jesus. We'll determine when we see Jesus as true man and when we see Him as true God. We'll also learn about Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, and we'll connect that with Easter and our own promise of salvation.

Math:
This week in math we'll start algebra, but don't worry--we're starting with basic missing addends! We'll be using bar models to identify what we know and what we're missing in the equation. We'll be using drawings and equations to represent addition and subtraction situations, analyzing the word problems to determine how we're going to solve it.

Language Arts:
This week in Language Arts we'll be looking at using y as a vowel, specifically when it says a short i sound. We'll be practicing lots of different and interesting words, and I've encouraged the students to use the words we work on in class to help them study, as I'll be pulling from those words for our practice test and final test on Friday.

Social Studies:
We'll also be continuing our unit on Heroes in Social Studies. This week we'll be looking at those who fought for women's rights. We'll also talk about farmworkers' rights, and we'll discuss who is on Mount Rushmore and why.
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-22964762635340645362024-03-11T08:09:00.000-07:002024-03-11T08:09:15.259-07:00Week 27
We have a full week ahead of us! Here's what we're doing this week:

Math:
We'll be finishing up our module on addition and subtraction fluency. We'll use some of the strategies we've learned to add 3 and 4 two-digit numbers, looking for doubles, tens, and near doubles to help us add quickly and accurately.

Christian Studies:
We'll learn about the parable of the sower this week and we'll discuss how we are the soil. We'll discuss what the soil stands for, and we'll determine which soil we'd like to be. We'll also talk about Mary anointing Jesus with expensive perfume, and we'll tie that into Lent.

Language Arts:
This week we'll be spelling words that use a silent e for other uses (other than a magic e). Some of the uses we'll be looking at are:
~after an "s" to distinguish it from a plural
~after an "s" to distinguish between homophones
~after a "v" or "j" to end a word
~after "th" at the end to make a voiced sound

We'll also start a new book called Money Matters! We'll discuss things like budgeting, expenses and income, and the history of money.

Art:
Last week we learned about Georgia O'Keeffe and saw lots of examples of her artwork. Each student received a different picture of a flower, zoomed in, and they used their pencil to draw the details they want to include. This week we'll be using water colors to paint our flowers!

Social Studies:
We'll start a new unit on heroes. We'll discuss what heroes are and how they help us. We'll also talk about heroes for freedom in history.
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-20671088679726114752024-03-04T10:48:00.000-08:002024-03-04T10:48:01.129-08:00Week 26
We have another different week ahead of us!

Early Dismissals:
We have two early dismissals coming up on Friday, March 8 and Monday, March 11. School will be let out at 11:15 AM. Please let me know if your child's after school plans are different on that day so I can get them where they need to go!

Christian Studies:
We've been learning about Jesus' early ministry, and this week we're learning about the miracle of Jesus healing a blind man who had great faith. We'll also learn the parable of the rich fool. We always have great discussions about how to apply what we've learned in these stories to our everyday lives!

Math:
This week in math we're starting our new module on addition and subtraction fluency. We'll use the steps we've been doing in addition and subtraction and will rewrite equations and practice adding and subtracting, with and without regrouping.

Language Arts:
This week in language arts we'll be spelling contractions that end in "have," "will," and "would." We'll identify the two words that make the contraction, then we'll identify which words fly out when we slam them together, and we'll remember to put an apostrophe there.

Science:
We'll be finishing up our science unit on how we can find the best place for a plant to grow. This week we'll look at a claim and identify whether we agree or disagree with it. We'll also state evidence for why we agree or disagree.
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-16618846448049654002024-02-26T08:07:00.000-08:002024-02-26T08:07:17.408-08:00Week 25
We have a busy week this week! Here are some things to know:

Chapel:
Chapel this week is on Friday for Grand-Friend's Day, rather than on Wednesday.

Book Fair:
The book fair is this week! Our class will get to preview it on Monday morning, and can bring money starting Tuesday. Please make sure their money is in a bag or envelope with their name on it. You can calso refer to the Newslice for information on how to add money to their account. They will be able to shop during recess!

Report Cards:
Report cards will go home on Thursday, February 29. Please check their homework folders for them.

Grand-Friend's Day:
Grand-Friend's Day is on Friday, March 1. If you haven't done so yet, please follow the QR code on the flyer sent home last week. Each student needs an adult to accompany them that day. Please see my email for more information.

Early Dismissal on Friday:
Friday is an early release day. Students will be released at 11:15. Please plan accordingly, and let me know if your child's regular after-school plans are different that day!
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-18534583540634312252024-02-20T10:12:00.000-08:002024-02-20T10:12:22.181-08:00Week 24
We're back to an almost-normal week, and we have a lot on the docket this week!

Math:
We'll be reviewing adding with regrouping (aka "carrying the one"), and we'll start on subtraction with regrouping (aka "borrowing"). We'll list the steps for both addition and subtraction, and we'll be spending lots of time practicing going through each step. The more they practice the steps in order, the easier it will become. Here are the steps that we're using:

Addition:
1. Add the ones
2. Regroup, if needed (10+)
3. Add the tens

Subtraction:
1. Look at the ones
2. Regroup, if needed (top # is less than bottom #)
3. Subtract the ones
4. Subtract the tens

Language Arts:
This week we'll be using our language arts time for a big writing piece. We've read two stories about kids who have made decisions about money. In Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday we read about Alexander's poor decisions about money. In A Chair for My Mother, we read about the little girl and her family's decision to save to buy a chair. The second graders will create a character who makes a decision about money. They'll write a story with a couple of events, using signal words (i.e., first, next, then) to signify the sequence of events. They'll go through the writing process to prewrite, write a draft, revise, edit, and publish their writing.

Christian Studies:
We're into the start of Jesus' ministry in Christian Studies! This week we'll be talking about Jesus and Zaccheus. We'll focus on Jesus' grace and forgiveness, and the way our hearts can change when we're forgiven. We'll also talk about Jesus stilling the storm, and we'll connect that miracle to how Jesus can still the storms (or fears) in our lives.

Science:
We've learned about some of the things a plant needs to survive. This week we'll be looking at pollination and how plants can reproduce. We'll be examining bees and why they're such good pollinators, and then the students will design and build their own pollination gadget, using their knowledge of bees and pollination.

Art:
In art we'll learn about Thomas Kinkade and the style of his artwork. Then the kids will create their own masterpiece, inspired by Thomas Kinkade's artwork.
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-72352693056575986572024-02-12T10:18:00.000-08:002024-02-12T10:18:23.548-08:00Week 23--LEST Week!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e0d03; font-family: "Comic Sans MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; white-space-collapse: preserve-breaks;">Monday, February 12:
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e0d03; font-family: "Comic Sans MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; white-space-collapse: preserve-breaks;">~Day 100!

Stuffed Animal and Movie Day!
The 2nd graders will be watching The Lion King (2019 version)
on Thursday afternoon! For the movie,
they can bring a stuffed animal (standard-size or smaller, please) to have on
their desk. If they’d like to bring an
extra snack for the movie, they can bring that in their lunchbox that day.

Christian Studies:
This week in Christian Studies we’ll be learning about the start of Jesus’
ministry. We’ll discuss how He called
His disciples, and we’ll talk about Him healing a man at the pool.

Math:
This week in math we’ll finish off our module on taking apart (“decomposing”)
numbers to help us add and subtract more fluently. We’ll then start two-digit addition and
subtraction. We won’t finish this module
before our long LEST break, so we’ll do some review when we get back and make
sure we get some extra practice in before we move on after LEST.

Language Arts:
This week we’ll be reviewing spelling concepts we’ve learned over the last
several weeks. Those patterns are: the 3
Great Rules (doubling, change, and drop), Consonant-le endings, Kind Old Words,
and the Bossy R concept for or and ar.
The practice test will have the same 10 concept words as the test on
Friday, so they will be able to get some good practice in.

take our test on Tuesday. We’ll be
reading clocks, adding hands to the clock to show the time, telling the time in
words and numbers, and identifying whether certain events happen in the A.M. or
the P.M. We’ll then start our next
module, revisiting adding and subtracting strategies. This will prepare us to add and subtract
double digits, with regrouping (aka “borrowing” and “carrying the one”).

Language Arts:
This week we have a fun spelling concept called “Kind Old Words.” This set of words are unique in that the
vowel says its name (it’s long sound) while not following the rules usually associated
with long vowel sounds. The endings we’ll
be looking at are: -ind, -ild, -ost, -old, and -olt. We have no new red words this week, but we
will be reviewing five red words this week: hour, buy, through, always, and
sure.

We’ll also be looking
at A Chair for My Mother in depth, focusing on some vocabulary words, as
well as the structure of the story. We’ll also discuss the traits of the
characters, and we’ll find evidence to back up our opinions.

Science:
We’ll be starting our unit on plants and how we can find the best place for a
plant to grow. We’ll discuss the word “habitat”
and we’ll be asking questions about habitats to help us understand different
components that impact a plant’s ability to grow and increase in population.

Christian Studies:
We’re finishing up our stories from the Old Testament and we’ll dive into the New
Testament. First, we’ll look at Old
Testament prophesies and God’s promises to His people that He would send a
Savior. We’ll connect those promises to God’s
promises to us. Then we’ll look at the
foretelling and then birth of John the Baptist.

Steampunk Family Night (which will be next Thursday, January 25 from 6-7 PM).
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-20988688365789191772024-01-08T08:51:00.000-08:002024-01-08T08:51:48.621-08:00Week 18
It's a new year and we started the week off with everyone at school! I'm looking forward to watching the class take off--2nd graders tend to show major growth after winter break, and then again after spring break. It's one of my favorite things about teaching this grade!

Christian Studies:
This week we'll be learning about Jonah and some of the minor prophets. We'll discuss what a prophet is, as well as the messages God had these prophets share. We'll also talk about Nehemiah rebuilding the wall and God returning His people from captivity.

Math:
This week in math we'll begin our module on telling time. We'll review what they learned last year (telling time to the hour and half hour), and then we'll tell time in 5 minute increments. We'll also talk about different ways to tell and write time (i.e., 2:30, half past 2, etc.), and we'll practice telling and writing time with A.M. and P.M.

Language Arts:
We'll be spelling words with a consonant-le ending (i.e., buckle, crumble, bugle, etc.). We'll discuss how the consonant-le is the last syllable type we'll be learning about, and the reason it has an e at the end is because every syllable needs a vowel. We'll practice spelling these words throughout the week.

We'll also be exploring character traits as we re-read parts of A Chair for My Mother. The students will identify a character trait that describes the main character, and then they'll use details from the text to justify their answers.

Social Studies:
We'll continue learning about Communities and Resources in Social Studies, this week examining farms of the past and farms of today. We'll also discuss how food gets from the farm to our tables. We'll finish off the week with a test on communities and resources, using our magazines as a tool.

Kids Heart Challenge:
We had the chance last year to support the American Heart Association through fundraising for their Kids Heart Challenge. We'll have that opportunity again this year, and our kick off assembly is on Friday at 2:30!
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-18702069966612125012023-12-18T08:00:00.000-08:002023-12-18T08:05:10.812-08:00Week 17--Last School Week of 2023!
This is our last week
of school for 2023, and it’s going to be a full one!

PM. For the evening program, students should
arrive at 5:30 PM. Students should wear
standard of dress for the 2 PM program. For
the 6 PM program, they can wear either standard of dress or dressy, Christmas
clothes. Please make sure to follow the
free dress guidelines on pages 28-29 of the handbook, and let me know if you
have any questions!

The Tale of Despereaux:
We've been reading The Tale of Despereaux over the last trimester, and we're finally finished with it! We'll be watching the movie on Monday, and we'll have a discussion about things that are the same and things that are different between the book and the movie.

Christian Studies:
This week we’ll talk about the fall of Judah, and we’ll briefly discuss how God
used these bad times in the life of His people for good. We’ll also talk about Esther and learn about
how God used her for His purpose.

Math:
We’ll finish up our module on dollar amounts and solving problems involving

lesson on solving problems using money, then we’ll have a practice test, and we’ll
take our test on Wednesday.

Language Arts:
We will have no spelling concept this week.
Instead, we’ll be diving into Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last
Sunday and we’ll analyze the characters.
We’ll also start a new story called A Chair for My Mother. We’ll discuss the story structure and talk
about why the author may have laid the story out the way she did.

Social Studies:
We’ll start a new Social Studies unit on community and resources. We’ll discuss what resources are and how we
can take care of them. We’ll talk about
where these resources come from, and we’ll talk about how farming has changed
from long ago to today.
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-68545934551767731492023-12-11T14:37:00.000-08:002023-12-11T14:37:10.166-08:00Week 16
We're in for a week of gloomy, cloudy, wet weather! I've been encouraging the second graders to come prepared with warm, waterproof clothes.

Christmas Program:
The K-8 grade Christmas program is on Thursday, December 21 at both 2 PM and 6 PM. For the 2 PM program, students should wear standard of dress. For the 6 PM program, students can either wear standard of dress, or dressy clothes (no jeans). Please remember that their dressy clothes should follow the free dress guidelines in the handbook (i.e., no tank tops, nothing shorter than 4 inches above the knee, no stains/holes, etc.). They should also arrive at school at 5:30 PM for the evening performance. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Christian Studies:
This week we'll learn about Naaman, who was healed of leprosy with God's power. It's a great opportunity for us to talk about the impact we can have on those who don't know Jesus by telling them about Him. It's also really neat for us to make connections between Naaman and our baptism. We'll also learn about Hoshea and the fall of Israel--it's been fun to teach the 2nd graders about the history of Israel (both the good and the bad), and to see a general thread of God being faithful, regardless of the decisions the Israelites made.

Math:
This week in math we'll finish our module on identifying and counting coins. We'll start our next module, which will focus on solving problems with money and using dollar amounts.

Language Arts:
This week we'll learn about adding suffixes to words that end in y. We'll change the y to an i before adding our suffix if there's a consonant before the y, or if we're adding ing.

We'll also take a closer look at our book Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday. We'll glean some information from the illustrations and use the pictures in conjunction with the text to help us better understand the story.

Social Studies:
We'll take our unit test on North America, and the students will show what they have learned about the continent on which we live.

We'll also have some Christmas activities and we'll have some Christmas program practices!
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-67868751084098959142023-12-04T15:16:00.000-08:002023-12-04T15:16:43.402-08:00Week 15
It's going to be a wet, but warmer, week this week!

Christian Studies:
This week in Christian Studies we'll discuss God's faithfulness, despite our sin, as we talk about Solomon falling away from God. We'll also talk about God speaking to Elijah in a small, quiet whisper, and we'll discuss that God is always with us and guiding us, even when we don't see it or feel it.

Math:
This week in math, we'll be identifying and counting coins. We'll also compare coin combinations and will show amounts in different ways. Note: This would be a good couple of weeks to switch it up and have your second grader count coins for their 5 minutes of flash cards!

Language Arts:
This week we'll be learning the second of the "Three Great Rules." This week we'll be talking about dropping the e when adding "ed" or "ing" suffixes. Look for the letter in your child's folder on Monday for more information!

In reading we'll be reading a new story called Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday by Judith Voist. We'll talk about the story structure, and we'll use the illustrations to help us gain more information about the characters and the story.

Social Studies:
This week we'll continue our unit on North America. This week we'll be talking about seasons and climates in North America, plant regions in North America, and then the fact that the world can be broken up into regions, as well.
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-82213304516266550332023-11-27T08:37:00.000-08:002023-11-27T08:37:12.728-08:00Week 14
I hope everyone had a
wonderful, restful Thanksgiving! We’re
back to a normal routine, with a full week of school, and we’ll be diving into
more Christmas service practice!

Math:
In math this week, we’ll be finishing up our module on three-digit
numbers. We’ve already counted by 1s,
5s, and 10s within 1,000, added and subtracted 10 and 100, and identifying and extending
patterns. This week we’ll be comparing
three-digit numbers, using words and symbols.
We’ll do a practice test to review, and we’ll take our module test on Thursday. On Friday, we’ll start our module on counting
coins.

Language Arts:
We’ll be learning an important rule in English this week called the doubling
rule. You double the final consonant in
a stressed syllable with a short vowel and one final consonant before adding a
suffix that begins with a vowel (i.e., sadder, beginning). If the suffix begins with a consonant, do not
double the final consonant, and do not double the letter “x.”

Christian Studies:
This week in Christian Studies we’ll learn about how God uses leaders, despite
their sinfulness. We’ll briefly discuss
David and Bathsheba, and then we learn about Solomon and his prayer for wisdom.

Reading:
In reading this week we’ll read a new story called The House on Maple Street. This story has a unique structure, so we’ll
discuss the story structure, the setting in the story, and the author’s
purpose.

Social Studies:
We’ll start our unit on North America.
We’ll start off by making predictions about whether some statements are
true or false. Then we’ll learn about
the countries in North America. We’ll
talk about bodies of water and landforms in North America, and then we’ll talk
about how to use a landform map.
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-32714831889727687282023-11-13T08:53:00.000-08:002023-11-13T08:53:32.287-08:00Week 12
We

Christian
Studies:
This week in Christian Studies we’ll learn about the death of Eli the priest
and what happened with the Ark of the Covenant after that. We’ll talk about how God listens to our
prayers and how He takes care of us, even when we aren’t faithful to Him. We’ll also talk about King David (before he
was king), Jonathan, and Saul. We’ll

This week in language arts we’ll be exploring using the vowel team “igh” for
the long i sound. We’ll brainstorm words
that have that spelling in them, we’ll practice the sounds we’ve learned so
far, and we’ll write words and sentences using the red words and concept words.

This includes three-consonant blends, schwa, Bossy R (er, ir, ur), and the diphthongs we've learned (oi/oy, and ou/ow). We'll be practicing the same 5 red words throughout the week, which will be the ones on the test on Thursday, and all of the words on the practice test will be on the test on Thursday.

Social Studies:
In Social Studies this week we'll continue our unit on location, discussing characteristics of urban, suburban, and rural communities. We'll also talk about how to find locations on maps and globes.

STAR Tests:
We'll be taking the STAR test again this week, which will give the second graders their new AR levels (which will begin after Thanksgiving break). I'll be reminding the kids to slow down, take breaks when needed, and do their best work so they can show the growth they've had in reading this year!
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-4296249521075227162023-10-30T08:09:00.001-07:002023-10-30T08:09:38.629-07:00Week 10Another full week with some shifting weather! I'll be encouraging the kids to come prepared with layers, since it seems we'll have a different type of weather every day!

Harvest Party:
We'll have our harvest party on Tuesday, October 31 from 1:45-2:45 PM. The kids will do a craft, have a snack, play a game, and listen to some fall/harvest type books. Look for pictures on Seesaw!

Math:

This week in math we'll be finishing up our module on hundreds, tens, and ones. We'll be using place value to 1,000, then we'll do a practice test, and take the test on place value. We'll do our intro into the next module, and we'll end the week with some more practice on using expanded form.

Language Arts:
This week we'll be learning about a different diphthong: ou and ow. We'll practice saying the sound and listening to how the different sounds blend together. We'll discuss the rules for using the spelling (ou at the beginning and middle of words and syllables, ow at the end of words and syllables and when followed by an "l" or "n"). We'll also work on spelling words with ou and ow, both in isolation and in sentences.

In reading we'll discuss pictures and captions and how they can add information to the text. We'll also identify and define key words in a text.

Christian Studies:
This week we'll continue learning about Moses and the Israelites, and we'll meet Joshua. We'll talk about God providing water for the Israelites through Moses striking a rock, and we'll talk about the fall of Jericho.

Social Studies:

We'll continue practicing using a map, and we'll talk about location in various ways.
Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-35137801941538922332023-10-23T08:44:00.001-07:002023-10-23T08:44:16.945-07:00Week 9
We're back for a regular week of school, and it looks like the weather is finally changing! A few things to think about with colder weather:

We will still go outside for recess, so please have your child come prepared for cold weather.

Scarves, gloves, and hats are all great ideas (it's a good idea to label them with your last name on the tags)

Snow suits and snow pants are not needed.

Snow boots can be brought to school and students can change into them before recess (once it snows, of course)

Christian Studies:
This week in Christian Studies we'll be learning about the Israelites' disobedience, even just a month after seeing God's power on Mount Sinai! We'll learn about them making and worshipping a golden calf. We'll also learn about God's instructions for building the tabernacle, which would be the tent-like worship place.

Math:
In math this week we'll start a new module, focusing on place value and different ways to write numbers. This week we'll group tens as hundreds, we'll understand three-digit numbers, we'll represent three-digit-numbers, and we'll use hundreds, tens, and ones to represent numbers.

Language Arts:
We'll learn about new vowel teams this week that are called diphthongs. This is when two vowels (or consonants that sometimes act like vowels like "y") team up to make a new sound. This week we'll focus on oi and oy.

Our reading will focus on the main topic of a part of a text. We'll also discuss some vocabulary, and we'll talk about supporting details that give information for the main topic.

Social Studies:
This week we'll start our new Social Studies unit on location. We'll talk about grid maps and finding places on a grid map. We'll also compare and contrast photos and maps. Then we'll talk about absolute and relative location.

Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584856795899999077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970556165638978691.post-46509758149815754582023-10-16T08:26:00.004-07:002023-10-16T08:26:39.405-07:00Week 8

We have a very short week this week, but it will be packed
